ALR Update: January 2025

Chapter 202 Candy Cane Ride, December 21, 2024

ALR Chapter 202 Beacon Newsletter Column

(Note: for the past few months I have been writing the Beacon newsletter column for ALR Chapter 202 in Columbia, Missouri. Sharing that info here in an effort to share the word about the good work this amazing group of Riders is doing for the veterans’ community in central Missouri.)

Even though December’s plunging temperatures cut back on the amount of time were able to spend on two wheels, ALR Chapter 202 managed to keep busy not only celebrating the joy of the holidays, but also reaching out to the central Missouri veterans’ community in a variety of ways. Riders from our chapter participated in Wreaths Across America on Dec. 14. We made a $1,000 donated to the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program to help provide toys for underprivileged children. In addition to our chapter funds, individual riders made $270 in charitable contributions and volunteered 194.75 hours of their time.

We joined with our wider American Legion family in celebrating the Army-Navy football game, helping with decorating the post building, sharing in the holiday dinner, and representing the post at the Welcome Home Veterans Residence fundraising dinner. Other members honored our fallen heroes as part of the Patriot Guard Riders, providing flag lines at both local funerals and internments at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville

Toys for Tots Donation

In the midst of all of this off-bike activity we were still able to get some time out on the road. This month chapter 202 participated in the Hooligans and Guardians toy drives, the Fulton Christmas parade, and the 4th annual Candy Cane Cheer Ride. On Dec. 21 several of our harder core riders bundled up, rode through town with the Christmas carols blaring on the stereo, and passed out candy canes and treats to kids while their families completed their last-minute shopping. Altogether we logged 3,083 miles and spent $340.15 on fuel.

As the new year begins, we are preparing for the annual ALR corn hole league. Starting Jan. 28 you are invited to join us every Tuesday until March 18th for a time of fun and socializing. The cost $50 per team. Doors open at 6 p.m. with games starting at 6:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Please reach out to Bridget McGuire or Sandi Gruenewald to reserve your team spot.
