We are in the middle of the campaign season. People are frustrated and anxious. The truth is that this is nothing new. Human beings attempting to govern themselves is always difficult. Jesus’ own disciples struggled with bitter division as early as Acts 15.

The question is not whether we will disagree. The question is how we do so. Imagine how different things would be if our candidates took James’ words to heart. “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” (James 1:19-20 NRSV)
