“I don’t have any bread.” (1 Kings 17:1-16)
November 1 is All Saints Day. It is the day the church remembers the saints who have taught us about Christ’s love and shown us what it means to live faithfully in difficult times.
These witnesses can come in many unexpected forms. The Widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings 17:1-16 helped preserve Elijah’s life when he was on the run from King Ahab. Ultimately, her trust in Elijah’s promise even saved her life and that of her son.
Jesus tells us not to worry, but this can be hard to do when it feels like things are falling apart around us. Fortunately, this story reminds us that the Holy Spirit can work in even the most difficult of situations. The witness of the saints in our lives assures us that what was true for Elijah is true for us as well.
