Understanding the begats
Immediately following Christ’s baptism, Luke 3:23-38 relates Jesus’ family tree. It is a long list of names that goes from Joseph all the way back to Adam and includes some of the most famous characters of biblical history.
Sections like this are often our least favorite to read. Why should we care who begat whom?
The reasons that these lists exist is that they tell us who we are and where we fit in the kingdom of God. They also tell us of the eternal nature of God’s promise. The same covenant that sustained Adam, Abraham, and David will sustain us as well.
